Math on Stage is a Bad Idea: Using a Capo Without Confusing Your Chords

· One min read
Musician @ Bandfix

The song is in Eb. You want to play open G shapes with a capo on the 8th fret. Or is it the 7th? Wait, if I play a G shape, that's actually an Eb... but the chart says Eb... so do I play a C shape? Your brain freezes. You play the wrong chord. Everyone looks at you.

The Old Way: Writing "CAPO 3" in huge red letters and trying to mentally translate "Em" to "C#m" in real-time. It's a recipe for disaster.

The Bandfix Way: Capo Feature.

  1. Tell Bandfix: "I want to play in G."
  2. Tell Bandfix: "The song is in Eb."
  3. Bandfix says: "Capo 8".
  4. It displays G chords on the screen.

You read G. You play G. It sounds like Eb. No math required.

Pro Tip: You can set capo positions per song, so you never have to remember which fret to use.

I Left My Capo in the Car: Digital Survival Skills

You're on stage. The next song is "Here Comes the Sun." It requires a Capo on the 7th fret. You reach for your pocket. It's empty. You left your capo in the van. The chart says "D shape (Capo 7)." If you play a D chord without a capo, it will be in the wrong key. You have to mentally transpose D up to A major instantly.

The Old Way: Panic. Sweating. Playing the wrong chords and hoping nobody notices (they will).

The Bandfix Way: Transpose.

  1. Open the song in Bandfix.
  2. Tap Transpose.
  3. Change the key from "D (Capo 7)" to "A (No Capo)."

Bandfix rewrites the chart in the actual sounding key. You can now play the song using barre chords in the correct key without doing any mental math.

Pro Tip: Keep a spare capo in your guitar case. But keep Bandfix on your iPad just in case.

Guitarists: Stop Dancing on Pedals and Focus on Playing

The chorus is coming. You need to: 1. Switch from clean to distortion. 2. Turn on your delay. 3. Scroll to the next page of lyrics. 4. Sing the harmony. You're doing a tap dance that would make Fred Astaire jealous, and you're one millisecond away from falling over.

The Old Way: A massive pedalboard and frantic footwork. You spend more time looking at your feet than the crowd.

The Bandfix Way: MIDI Control.

  • One Tap Rules Them All: Configure Bandfix to send a MIDI signal when you turn the page or select a song.
  • Automation: When you switch to "Song B", Bandfix tells your Helix/Kemper/Fractal to switch to "Preset B". Automatically.

Pro Tip: Use a Bluetooth MIDI adapter (like the WIDI Master) to keep your rig wireless and clean.

Let the app do the tap dance. Download Bandfix

You're playing a complex prog-rock set. Song 1 requires a clean chorus sound. Song 2 needs a high-gain lead. You finish Song 1. You have to: 1. Turn the page on your iPad. 2. Stomp on your Helix to change presets. 3. Adjust your volume pedal. You're doing a tap dance, and if you miss one step, you start the next song with the wrong tone.

The Old Way: Buying a massive MIDI controller pedalboard and spending weeks programming "setlists" into it.

The Bandfix Way: Song MIDI Settings.

  • One Action, Multiple Results: When you swipe to the next song in Bandfix, it automatically sends a Program Change message to your modeler or keyboard.
  • Instant Recall: Your rig switches to the exact preset you need before you even play a note.

Pro Tip: You can even send specific MIDI commands for different sections of a song (e.g., switch to "Lead" for the solo, then back to "Rhythm" for the verse).

Let the app handle the switching so you can handle the playing. Download Bandfix
